In preparation for the coming Yuletide season, the Philippine National Police (PNP) in coordination with the Philippine Pyrotechnics Manufacturers and Dealers Association, Incorporated (PPMDAI) conducted recently the Fireworks Safety Refresher Course for all manufacturers, dealers and retailers of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in the whole country.
CSupt. Emelito T. Sarmiento, Director of the PNP Civil Security Group, together with CSupt. Napoleon Estilles, Chief, Firearms and Explosive Office (FEO), and PPMDAI officers personally supervised the conduct of the seminars. Three seminars were held, as seen below:

In the seminar, Arcadio “Adiong” Sta. Ana, safety consultant of PPMDAI, a pyrotechnician with 53 years of experience in manufacturing fireworks, gave a lecture on lessons learned from past and present explosions and accidents in the industry. He emphasized that making fireworks is a dangerous business and the safety guidelines in handling, mixing, loading and packaging should be given the utmost importance. Rolando Bonilla, PPMDAI spokesman, said that that support from the government through conducting more seminars is essential for the development to the fireworks industry.
Celso C. Cruz, Chairman Emeritus of PPMDAI, said that this is a milestone in the industry, as no less than the Director of the Civil Security Group took time to go around the country to teach all the stakeholders and the public the proper ways to safely enjoy the coming New Year celebration with a bang. He said that,” we are now preparing the schedule of seminars to be conducted at the second and third quarter for the year 2011 and will post at PPMDAI website (www.ppmdai.org) for further information.”
Meanwhile, Vimie Erese, President of PPMDAI, predicts that the fireworks sales will skyrocket as Filipinos will be in a festive mood to celebrate the newfound hope and prosperity brought about by the new administration headed by President Noynoy Aquino. She cautioned the public to be extra careful because even legal fireworks can cause injury if not used properly.
